Stop open call FOMO: 6 steps to find the best opportunities for you
Article written by Kallenia

With so many open calls and opportunities to share art, it is time to think strategically about how and what you submit to.

Your art and your time are valuable, so be sure that you are not following the FOMO that has you jumping through hoops just to feel like you are going to be seen.

Instead, apply this 6 step strategy so that your art lands in front of the right audience for you.

1) What is the goal/end result?
Is the prize worth your time and energy?
If you sell your pieces for $100 and the top prize is $50, then it might not be worth it.

2) Is there an exhibition spot? What are the details?
Is it IRL or online?
Is it in a gallery or showcase that would elevate your resume?
It is a one time, or reoccurring showcase?

Choose the opportunities that make sense for your goals.

3) Would you have to create a new piece, or do you already have something that will fit?
If you need to create something new, then points 1 & 2 carry more weight.
But if you can repurpose something you already have, then you might be more flexible on the first 2 points.

4) Who are the curators/judges? Do they have a history of follow through?
What style/types of art do they collect/support?
If someone doesn’t care for or collect your style of art, then it's likely best to move on to a different opportunity. Focus instead on contests that clearly include and/or favor your style and tools.

Also, be sure to check on if they have held similar opportunities in the past and their track record for sales, follow through, organization, and other details that lead to a successful outcome for everyone involved.

5) Would the contest challenge you and push your artistic skills?
If you are ready to undertake a challenge, you will likely gain a great deal of knowledge just from the process of trying something new.
This can add incredible value to your artist resume and skillset.

Be brave and try new things!

6) Don't give into FOMO.
There will always be more open calls, contests, exhibitions, etc.
Learn to value your time and art.

Stop thinking every opportunity is "IT".

Instead, choose the opportunities where the value is aligned with your own.

Believe in yourself 🎉
